Residence; deregistration

If you move out of your home and do not move into a new home in Germany (e.g. if you move abroad), you must deregister with your registration office.

You can deregister when moving abroad in person, in writing, or electronically. When deregistering electronically, the person required to deregister can verify their identity by providing their last name, first name, date of birth, and the serial number of the ID card or passport most recently recorded in the registration system. Please also provide the registration office with your new address and the name of the foreign country.

If you are giving up one of several residences, you must personally deregister the residence you are giving up. You can do this either at the registration office for your sole or primary residence or at the registration office responsible for your secondary residence. To deregister, present your identification document, provide your move-out date, and confirm that the information listed on the deregistration form is accurate and complete. Spouses, domestic partners, and family members who share the same previous and future residences may use a single deregistration form; it is sufficient for one of the individuals required to register to confirm the form.

If you give up your primary or sole residence and move into another residence within the country, it is sufficient to register atyour new place of residence (in person or electronically). The registration office at your new place of residence will notify your former municipality that you have moved.

You can deregister ex officio if you have not fulfilled your obligation to deregister.

If you do not deregister within two weeks, you are committing an offense. In this case, you can be fined up to €1,000.

Actual move-out from the apartment. A move-out is generally considered to have occurred when furnishings necessary for the use of the apartment are removed or when the expected period of absence exceeds one year.

You must deregister within two weeks of actually moving out. The earliest possible time for deregistration abroad is one week before moving out.
