School accident insurance; information about cost units

  • Brief description

Pupils (possibly also parents' councils, etc.) are covered by statutory accident insurance under the conditions of the German Social Code Book VII (SGB VII). This does not only apply after an accident has occurred, but also includes accident prevention measures, for example.

  • Description

While participating in school events, on the way to and from school and while taking part in supervision measures carried out by the school or in cooperation with the school immediately before or after lessons, pupils at general or vocational schools are covered by statutory accident insurance. Statutory accident insurance also covers volunteers such as parents' councils or school transport services under certain conditions.

The accident insurance institutions in Bavaria are the Kommunale Unfallversicherung Bayern (KUVB) and the Bayerische Landesunfallkasse (LUK).

In addition to the financial settlement of accidents in the school sector, the insurance providers are also responsible for accident prevention measures.

In the event of school accidents, the principal shall draw up an accident report and forward it to the accident insurance institution. He/she is supported in this by the safety officer .

  • Costs

There are no fees for pupils or parents/guardians. The costs are generally borne by the local authority or the Free State of Bavaria.
