A death abroad can be subsequently certified upon application to the competent registry office if the person who died abroad was a German citizen.
The registry office in whose jurisdiction the person who died abroad had their last place of residence or habitual abode is responsible for notarization. If this does not give rise to jurisdiction, the registry office in whose jurisdiction the applicant has or last had their domicile or habitual residence shall notarize the death. If this does not result in jurisdiction either, the registry office I in Berlin will notarize the death.
Prerequisites
Subsequent certification of the death is possible for
- German nationals
- Stateless persons, homeless foreigners and foreign refugees with habitual residence in Germany
Eligible applicants are
- the parents of the deceased
- the children of the deceased
- the spouse or partner of the deceased
