Third-order watercourses; information on watercourse maintenance

  • Brief description

In Bavaria, the maintenance of third-order water bodies is the responsibility of local authorities and water and soil associations.
  • Description

There are around 90,000 km of small watercourses in Bavaria. The municipalities and water and soil associations are obliged to maintain these water bodies. In some cases, this maintenance obligation is also transferred to users (e.g. hydropower plant operators).

If you have any questions about the maintenance and structural condition of smaller watercourses and their banks, please contact your local authority in the first instance.
